7.2 Million Dollar Lawsuit Lost
In 2013 the hit single Blurred Lines was released worldwide. Voices of Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke were heard on every radio for almost a year. Quickly rising to the top of the charts and earning many props and awards Blurred Lines was the #1 song in America for 12 weeks. Although its great beat and addicting lyrics, controversy surrounded and sometimes overshadowed the song's success. Shortly after being released the Marvin Gaye Estate, run by Marvin Gaye's children, accused Thicke and Williams for copying and using Gaye's Got To Give It Up song released in 1977 to write Blurred Lines. Robin Thicke made it clear that he did not have any affiliation in the writing of Blurred Lines but that Pharrell did. Williams said that mid-year 2012 he wrote the song in about an hour and didn't use any of Marvin Gaye's music to help with the process. Williams said that as a child he loved to listen to Gaye and would never plagiarize a renowned legend's work. All of that being said the jury found Thicke and Williams guilty. After the verdict was read Nona Gaye, daughter of Marvin, cried out and said, “Right now, I feel free, free from Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke’s chains and what they tried to keep on us and the lies that were told.” Personally I hope that Robin and Pharrell fight this, after listening to both songs numerous times I don’t hear any similarity besides good music.
